Thought for the Month – September

By Vince DiPasquale

Welcome to the fall season, a meaningful time of year. It is as though the world begins to emerge from the stillness of summer and return to the rhythms of daily life. In this season, we are reminded of two powerful words: reality and responsibility. Both can feel challenging, yet both can also become beautiful gifts when we are willing to embrace them.

So often, we spend a good portion of our lives avoiding reality. We play the “someday” game: someday things will get better; someday I’ll do this; someday I’ll do that. It recalls the famous Peanuts cartoon with Charlie Brown and Lucy. Lucy would hold the football for Charlie Brown to kick, only to pull it away at the last moment and send him tumbling. When the Peanuts gang asked, “Don’t you know she’s not going to hold it?” Charlie would answer, “Someday she will.”

Many of us live the same way. We wait for “someday” instead of facing what is true today. Our lives can become unmanageable when we refuse to accept reality. We may also fall into the “blame” game, finding it easier to blame others for our struggles than to take responsibility for our own choices, healing, and growth.

One thing I have learned is that life becomes simpler and more beautiful when we choose to face reality each day. Acceptance is a gift. When we accept reality, learn from it, and move forward, we give ourselves room to grow. I have also learned that holding on to resentments only continues the hurt. We must learn to let them go. Face them, heal them, forgive, and move on. It takes a special kind of courage to face life with a spirit of forgiveness.

We can begin to see the experiences of life as gifts. Our experiences are God’s way of teaching us, strengthening us, and helping us mature. One of the greatest spiritual words we can learn is acceptance. Nothing in life needs to be wasted. Our families, our history, and our life experiences can become our greatest teachers if we are willing to approach them with honesty, humility, and a positive attitude.

Everything we do in life is shaped by the way we face reality. I believe that when we have the courage to face our history, it can become one of our greatest sources of wisdom. Do not be afraid of reality. It can give you the strength to look at each situation with clearer eyes and a healthier spirit. Remember: you are your attitude. Our attitudes are learned, and we can choose to develop attitudes that help us live with greater peace, gratitude, and purpose.

Along with reality comes the gift of personal responsibility. To be responsible is to be free. Too often, we become dependent on people, places, or things and forget the importance of healthy independence. Learning responsibility is a process. It takes time, effort, patience, and personal investment. It cannot be taken for granted, and it cannot be handed to us by someone else.

We all know the saying, “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.” Life is a beautiful process when we are open to it. When we accept life as it comes and take responsibility for our part in it, we begin to grow into more mature, balanced, and compassionate people.

Maturity and personal responsibility are not always easy, but they are deeply rewarding. This fall, let us come out of hibernation and face the reality of life. Remember: you can run, but you cannot hide. Sooner or later, reality and responsibility will find us. The question is whether we are willing to meet them with courage, faith, and an open heart.

As we walk this spiritual journey called life, may we face each moment through the eyes of gratitude. Hopefully, one day we will be able to say, I am grateful for what was, what is, and what will be. I am willing to face all the realities of life with the spirit of personal responsibility. Enjoy the fall season. As the leaves change and mature, may we do the same. Let us be thankful for all the experiences life has given us and let us pray for wisdom to see their reality through positive eyes.
