A Prayer for the New Year

As we welcome a new year, we are invited to pause and reflect on life’s greatest gift—our spiritual journey. This is a time for renewal, a chance to rededicate ourselves to the purpose of life: growing in love and awareness.

The great teachers remind us to ask the ultimate question: ‘Who are we?’ Created in God’s image, we walk this earth as people in process—learning, struggling, and discovering. When we approach life with openness, love, and generosity, we uncover the beauty of our potential. Let us remember the simple truth: ‘There but for the grace of God.’ Be gentle with each person you meet. Follow the golden rule: love your neighbor as yourself. But first, learn to love and accept yourself. This is the foundation of all spiritual growth. When we do, we carry the gift of love to others. Love is the energy that heals, forgives, and connects us. We are not islands; we need each other. Love is the bond that unites the human family.

Generosity is another gift we are called to embrace. Life is abundant because God is generous. When we share freely, blessings return to us in ways we cannot imagine. Have faith. Be open. Do not worry. Trust that God’s care surrounds us always. His angels walk beside us as messengers of love and hope.

Look within, not without. Everything we need for this journey has already been given by our Creator. Ask yourself: What matters more—who you are or what you own? The more we cling to possessions, the more we fear losing them. Peace comes from knowing yourself. Let go and let God guide you. Life flows when we trust the process. Faith helps us discern what truly matters. Every person, every circumstance, every experience is a messenger, teaching us and shaping our awareness. This is the heart of our spiritual journey.

Life is a gift. Face your past with gratitude—it is your teacher. Celebrate the present and stay open to where you are being led. I look back on my struggles today with thankfulness because they revealed my strengths. From those lessons, I share hope that others may learn and grow.

I have been blessed with many teachers—my parents, family, church, recovery family at Starting Point, and of course my wife, stepdaughters, and grandchildren. I thank God daily for the grace to keep learning and listening.

My prayer for all of us is simple: may we walk this journey with love and generosity. To give is to receive. To love is to be loved. As we begin this new year, let us renew our commitment to these two gifts. Please don’t walk this path alone—we are all part of God’s family. Love and generosity only exist when shared. May God bless and guide us all in this new year of life.
